How To Choose Laser Spare Parts- The Type Of Laser Cutting Head?

Aug 17, 2023|

For handheld laser heads, the focal length will vary depending on the thickness of the sheet. This means that when you change from 5mm to 6mm sheet metal cutting, you have to focus manually. As a result, each time you change the sheet thickness to a different one, you have to adjust the height of the laser head to find the right focus distance, which wastes focusing time and increases cutting time

On the other hand, manual focusing requires a high level of skill on the part of the laser machine operator, because if an error is made during the focusing process, the accuracy and efficiency of the machine will be compromised.
Autofocus laser cutting heads have a built-in drive unit that allows the user to set up a continuous focusing program for high-speed perforated cutting of materials of varying thicknesses. With an autofocus laser head, you only need to focus on the first cut, and when it cuts again, the laser head detects the thickness of the sheet and automatically adjusts its height to find the correct focus.
So how does an autofocus laser head focus?
The laser head cannot change the nozzle height when cutting metal, i.e. the nozzle height does not change and therefore cannot be focused by lifting the cutting head.
The height of the nozzle and the focal length of the focusing lens cannot be changed, so the only way to change the position of the lens is to lower the focusing lens and reduce the focal length; if the focusing lens is up, the focus is up. According to this principle, the motor is used to adjust the position of the focusing lens up and down to realize autofocus.
Another automatic focusing method is to set up a variable curvature reflector before the beam enters the focusing lens, changing the curvature of the reflector to change the divergence angle of the reflected beam, thus changing the focus position.
With the auto-focus function, the laser cutting machine can automatically and quickly adjust the focus to the most suitable position when processing metal plates with uneven surfaces. This can greatly improve the cutting effect of the machine and also greatly shorten the punching time for thick plates.
Laser heads with automatic focusing are better than manual focusing and therefore more expensive. However, if your machine has a power of less than 1500W, a hand-held laser head can meet your needs. above 1500W, it is recommended that the cutter be equipped with an auto-focus laser head, which helps to cut metal materials quickly.
